Center Guiding for Variable-Width Webs: What to Specify

A center-guiding purchase starts with more than a controller mode. Define the required centerline, how both edges will be detected, how the sensing arrangement changes with job width, and whether width measurement is a separate deliverable.

Define the reference and the width-changeover method

Plan the center reference, edge detection and sensor positioning together. This general web-handling image does not demonstrate a particular center-guiding sensor configuration.

1. Specify the centerline the process must hold

Center guiding starts with a defined lateral reference. Erhardt+Leimer's ELGUIDER documentation distinguishes guiding to the machine centerline from guiding to a web center that is offset from it. It also treats guiding one web relative to another as a separate arrangement. Put the required reference on the machine drawing before specifying sensors.[2]

KRD engineering planning checklist: identify the downstream operation that needs a centered web, the machine datum, whether that datum changes between jobs, and the narrowest and widest materials. Record position tolerance at the relevant process point rather than only at the sensor.

2. Define how both edges will be detected

BST's operating instructions list two edge sensors, or one or two CCD cameras, for their web center-line mode. E+L separately documents web-center detection using wide-band sensing. These examples show why center guiding is a sensing arrangement and control-mode decision, not simply a requirement to buy two identical sensors.[1][2]

For an inquiry, describe both edges: material, transparency, coatings, holes, edge irregularity and the usable mounting space. Ask the supplier to confirm the detection method on representative samples. The cited BST and E+L arrangements do not establish interchangeability with KRD hardware.

3. Include sensor positioning in width changeovers

E+L illustrates manual positioning and motorized positioning for center guiding, including symmetric positioning about the machine center and positioning for an offset web center. Its specification questionnaire asks which positioning arrangement is required. A center-guiding quotation should therefore state how sensors will be positioned for each web width.[2]

4. Specify width measurement as a separate function

Center guiding and width display should be listed separately in the requirements. BST's documented width display requires both edges to be in the measuring range and width measurement to be calibrated. It reports an unavailable width when calibration is missing or an edge is not detected. E+L also describes calculating and displaying width from two scanned edges.[3][2]

If width information is needed for quality records, request its measurement range, accuracy, calibration procedure and output separately. Do not infer those specifications from the presence of a center-guiding mode. Likewise, the alarm behavior of the cited BST system is not a stated feature of EPC-A12.

5. Prepare an EPC-A12 configuration inquiry

KRD lists CPC center guiding among EPC-A12's modes and lists ultrasonic, photoelectric and CCD sensing principles. Its product page describes three 0–5 V analog inputs intended for two sensors and an external analog control signal. This supports including EPC-A12 in a configuration review; it does not confirm a particular sensor pair, automatic edge search or width-measurement capability.[4]

Send the web-width schedule, target centerline, material samples, sensor mounting drawing, intended positioning method, current controller and sensor models, and the downstream acceptance requirement. State explicitly whether the request includes width display or logging. KRD can then review the controller, sensing and correction arrangement against a defined project scope.

FAQ

Does center guiding always require two separate sensors?

No. The cited manufacturer documentation includes two edge sensors as well as camera and wide-band sensing arrangements. The selected system must provide the edge or center information required by its documented mode.

Does center guiding automatically include width measurement?

Do not assume so. Specify width display, accuracy, calibration and data output separately. The cited BST width-display function has its own detection and calibration requirements.

Must sensors move when the job width changes?

That depends on the sensing range and the selected arrangement. State the complete width range and ask for the documented manual, motorized or fixed sensing configuration required for the jobs.

Is EPC-A12 a starting point for a center-guiding inquiry?

Yes. KRD lists center guiding among its modes. The exact sensors, wiring, positioning arrangement and any width-measurement requirements still need confirmation for the proposed configuration.
